Becky Who is a performance poet who slams in English but lives in France, so she can genuinely claim to be misunderstood most of the time.
She discovered slam by accident when a colleague introduced it into their English teaching curriculum. She started writing slam poetry when another collegue challenged her to enter the student poetry slam, and has not stopped since. She is a regular at the open-mic nights at La Bobine, Grenoble, where they are very accepting of both her texts in English and her massacre of the French language. She has been known to write slams on demand and for special occasions in up to four languages.*
The whole "wrong language/country" thing means that Becky has not done much competitive slamming. She did get through to the second round (top five) of the Grenoble heats of the Nuits du Slam in February 2018, which was pretty cool considering she was the only one slamming in a foreign language (for her).
Becky is also a wife, mother-of two, full-time English teacher and frustrated musician, so she is rather busy and tends to lack sleep (a recurring theme in her poems). This blog is intended to be about the interaction between poetry and all the other aspects of life. She dreams of raising her kids to be happy, doing more poetry, having more time for writing and one day getting to perform in an English-speaking country. She finds writing about herself in the third person strange but revealing.
Please consider following Becky on her youtube channel.
*To be fair, she has to sub-contract the 3rd and 4th languages, and usually gets someone to check the grammar and expression in the 2nd.
One day, you'll be a star and will be so famous than someone will write about you! ^^
ReplyDeleteIt is not Becky btw, but L'Âme aux Rimes.
